But for those following a gluten free diet, or any dietary restriction for that matter, finding an advent calendar that’s safe can be a bit of a challenge.

So, whether you're shopping for yourself or a loved one, we've put together a super in-depth guide to gluten free advent calendars to help you pick the right calendar, without the stress. The majority of the advent calendars listed are entirely gluten-free without any ‘may contain’ warnings, but we have included those with a warning towards the end of this blog, for those gluten free who do eat products with such a statement.

It’s also really important to remember that product ingredients and labelling can change from year to year. For example, last year’s Toblerone advent calendar was entirely gluten-free, while this year it carries a “may contain” warning - an essential reminder to double-check each year.

We’ve also included a section to shed some light on the ongoing debate around the gluten free status of Lindt products, which frequently causes confusion within the gluten free community. Although we haven’t had a definitive answer from Lindt themselves, we’ve shared the latest information and allergy statements from Lindt so that you can make an informed decision based on your comfort level.

Dairy Free Advent Calendars

It’s wonderful to see so many advent calendars catering to multiple allergies and intolerances. Here’s a list of options that are both dairy free and gluten free. Just be mindful of the Montezuma’s and Candy Kittens calendars, as they both carry a ‘may contain’ milk warning, making them unsuitable for those with a milk allergy, rather than just an intolerance or preference.

Lindt Advent Calendars

Lindt can be a bit tricky when it comes to gluten free products and if you’ve been gluten free for a while, you’ve probably noticed that ‘barley malt extract’ appears in many of their ingredient lists. However, according to Lindt, some of their products containing this ingredient are actually considered gluten free.

On their website, under the FAQ “Is there gluten or barley malt in Lindt chocolate” Lindt explains the following:

So, what does this mean? The first part of their explanation suggests that any product containing ‘barley malt extract; is considered gluten free. However, this is somewhat contradicted by the second part, which clarifies that if you’re ‘sensitive to gluten’ they offer other products which are manufactured without any cereal or barley malt.

Is this distinction specifically for those with an allergy to barley rather than the gluten itself? We’ve reached out to Lindt for clarification on whether their advent calendars fall under this category (although, based on their explanation, they likely do).

It would of course be much clearer if Lindt used a gluten free statement or symbol on the packaging, but they do have a dedicated gluten free section on their website. Advent Calendars that are ‘May Contain’

The following advent calendars do not contain any gluten ingredients but they do state a ‘may contain’ warning on the packaging for gluten sources.

If the Heroes Advent Calendar is the same as the chocolate tub, then everything except the Dinky Decker is gluten free. The ‘may contain’ warning on the tub applies only to the Dinky Decker, meaning all other chocolates are completely safe for coeliacs. We’ve reached out to Cadbury to confirm this, but if do choose to go for it, just be sure to swap in a few of your favourite chocolates for the Dinky Decker days, or take a day off (though we recommend option 1 - what’s December without a chocolate a day?!).

Here’s a list of other advent calendars that do not have any gluten containing ingredients but do carry a ‘may contain’ warning. Brands like Thorntons, Hotel Chocolat, Divine, Tony’s, and even some Cadbury options fall into this category - highlighting why it’s so important to check each product individually and not assume that a brand is universally ‘safe’ for gluten free diets.
