The Christmas period can definitely be a tough time for people living with allergies or dietary requirements; it can feel like a minefield of gatherings, parties and unexpected visitors popping round. So, whether you’re gluten free yourself or catering for someone who is, we’ve put together a great guide to gluten free Christmas treats and party food available to pick up at the major UK supermarkets.

You’ll find a mix of ‘accidentally’ or ‘naturally’ gluten free finds plus some of our favourites from the dedicated free from sections of supermarkets. 🥳

You might notice that often, the gluten free content we post isn’t necessarily focussed on ‘the healthiest option’ and that’s down to a couple of reasons:

1) Our Mission: Gluten Free Glee is all about making life easier and more joyful for those living gluten free. We want to celebrate what you can eat rather than dwell on restrictions. For many, living with food allergies, intolerances, or dietary restrictions can feel overwhelming - and sometimes even tied to struggles with eating disorders. We’re here to lighten that load and bring back the fun in cooking, shopping, eating out and LIFE!

2) The Basics are covered: So many naturally gluten free foods - like fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, nuts, beans, pulses etc - are already part of daily diets (we’d hope they are anyway!). Most people don’t need help navigating the basics, and let’s face it, our content wouldn’t be anywhere near as popular if it was just showing different types of lettuce you can buy (there are lots though…)!

That said, here’s your friendly reminder (or PSA) to prioritise your gut health. Even if your gut hasn’t always been your best friend - I’m looking at you floppy villi - it plays a crucial role in your overall well-being. 💚

Christmas Dinner 🍽️

As we mentioned at the start of this blog, remember that so much food is naturally gluten free and it’s important to make sure you’re balancing treats with some healthy goodness. A Christmas dinner can quite easily be made gluten free with ‘naturally’ gluten free products and even more so when you’re cooking everything from scratch. But, lets be real, sometimes you need to prioritise convenience, so here’s some tips for when you’re shopping for gluten free Christmas dinner elements:

🍖 Meat - meat is of course naturally gluten free, but watch out for stuffing that’s not gluten free and any glazes that might also contain gluten

🍠 Vegetarian Mains - it’s quite difficult to come across main dishes that are an alternative to meat; the majority contain gluten as wheat is often used as an alternative - we’ve added some options below but making your own might be an easier option

🥕 Potatoes & Veg - again, vegetables are gluten free but when they’re jazzed up with glazes and seasonings, just double check for any gluten sources in the ingredients

🫓 Yorkshire Puddings - lucky for us, most supermarkets will stock either pre-made yorkshire puddings or a free from batter mix to make at home. P.S. If you don’t think that yorkshires deserve a place on your Christmas dinner then we can’t be friends…

🧆 Stuffing - similar to pigs in blankets, these days most stuffing is gluten free but there are still quite a few supermarket products that aren’t safe so always check. There are also quite a few ‘free from’ stuffing mixes around

🍶 Sauces - most sauces and condiments are gluten free (watch out for the obvious ones like english mustard and bread sauce) and this year there’s lots of naturally gluten free gravy products on the shelves, always check!
